Montepulciano is the symbolic red of Abruzzo: full-bodied, fruity, approachable. Not to be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano (where Vino Nobile is made from Sangiovese).
Montepulciano is the main grape of Abruzzo (Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC), the Marche (Rosso Conero DOC) and Molise. It produces wines of intense colour, full body, soft tannins and a profile of ripe red fruits (sour cherry, plum) and sweet spices.
⚠️ Note: it has NOTHING to do with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG (Tuscany), which is made from Sangiovese ("Prugnolo Gentile") in the Tuscan town of the same name. A special type: Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC is the rosé made from Montepulciano.
