Discovering Private Label Wines: Le vie dell'uva Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Today we continue our brief journey discovering Private Label wines. Our attention has long been captured by the brand: "Le vie dell'uva".

It is a brand created by the commercial group Selex, always very attentive to the quality of its products and the way they are presented. A reflection of this meticulousness are their retail outlets, found throughout the territory under the A&O, Dok, Famila and Iperfamila signs – well-organized, clean, with absolutely clear displays and layouts. In short, a company that pursues excellence!

The group was founded, as has often happened in Italy, from the union of food wholesalers in 1964, who went on to create the Consorzio A&O italiano, which about 15 years later would form the Selex group.

Today the company boasts approximately 5,500 private label references, over 6,000 retail outlets, 4.5 million loyalty cards and a market share of 16.5%!

The group is part of the purchasing and marketing central ESD Italia, established in 2001 by Selex and Esselunga, and today comprising Selex, Agorà Network, Acqua e Sapone and Sun.

The label design of the "Le vie dell'uva" wines is truly captivating and elegant!

They have divided the selection by region and offer a decent assortment of 51 labels: whites, reds, rosés and sparkling wines – there is truly something for every taste.

The wines are affordably priced and periodically they produce dedicated leaflets featuring only their private label range.

Now that we have described the context a little, let's talk about our product! Today we will be tasting a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, bottled on behalf of Selex by the well-known Abruzzo winery Citra Vini of Ortona.

Pouring it into the glass we can note the impenetrable purple-red color with violet hues; on the nose one perceives cherry and a smoky note. On the palate the body is a little too lean, the tannins are faint; on the retronasal we detect hints of tobacco and spice, but after just a few moments every sensation has faded away – the finish is short.

Not a bad product, considering it cost just over 3 euros – adequate, we would say, and unpretentious, almost anonymous for better or worse, as is probably right for a private label wine. The phrase I feel compelled to share, written on the label, offers the perfect positioning for the product – in contrast to the absurd flattery we can read on the back labels of other wines in this category: "Accompanies the everyday meal" – exactly, for a simple everyday meal it will do just fine.
