Jeff Bezos and Amazon have brought innovation and change to countless fields: from selling books to ultra-fresh products, through the Prime service and their excellent handling of returns and replacements.
Now that the well-known portal is beginning to sell products typically purchased at supermarkets, it is necessary to differentiate and offer something extra that drives shoppers to buy online rather than in a physical store – and not just for the sake of convenience.
We Italians, being the good romantic traditionalists that we are, will certainly take a little longer before routinely navigating the "virtual aisles" of the "Amazon supermarket." For now, however, major retail players such as Esselunga are beginning to fear the American giant and are reacting by trying to leverage their already established reputation in the sector and customer loyalty to refine similar services.
Among the products sold online, wine is of course included – ever the Cinderella of e-commerce.
Amazon has, however, come up with the idea of offering a sommelier service, through which a professional – as is often the case in wine shops, hotels, restaurants, and hypermarkets – will suggest food-wine pairings and the ideal wine to choose for special occasions.
Those interested will be able to call the Amazon Sommelier service and choose from 8,000 different labels – now we just need them to let us try it!
