We have already met Antonio Bellicoso, who told us about his work, introducing us to his winery, his passion, and the great expertise he demonstrates in every single operation carried out in the vineyard and cellar. Let us now move on to the tasting of his wines, small great masterpieces.
Let us first review some analytical parameters of the grapes used. The Freisa has a concentration of 19.5 – 20.5° Babo, an extract of 32–33 g/l and a pH of 3.6. The Barbera has 22 – 23° Babo, an extract of 37 – 38 and a decidedly more acidic pH, not exceeding 3.3–3.4. These are starting parameters that promise very well and justify the longevity hypotheses about which we have already written.
The tasting
Freisa d'Asti 2011 – 13.5%
It is very rare to encounter wines produced from this variety at these levels, with an extremely dense body and a very fine aroma. Deep ruby red in color with garnet reflections, on the nose one can appreciate the pleasingly majestic floral character, the fruit, the distinctly fragrant hints of morello cherry, raspberry and wild berries. On the palate the tannin is significant and reinforces the structure. It is a wine suited to first courses but also to be enjoyed throughout the entire meal.
Barbera d'Asti Amormio 2011 – 14.5%
A wine born of spectacular technique and well-managed nature, manifesting in a clear, deep ruby color, almost ink-like. Great strength and elegance on the powerful nose, with fruit of ripe plum, blackberry, and sour cherry. Great body, dark fruit, a dense weave in this beautiful wine and sumptuous glyceric softness on the palate. A soft, enveloping mass with retro-olfactory returns of ripe marasca cherry. Definitely worth trying paired with a great roast.
Barbera d'Asti Merum 2010 – 15%
Merum is a great wine of spectacular beauty, evident from its sumptuous color, its wonderful expressive complexity and its extract of monumental concentration. A result of such a level that can only be achieved with absolute oenological respect, which allows every aroma of the raw material to be preserved. It is therefore the effect of absolute analytical quality, of the exceptional organoleptic yield of this wine of superb caliber. Its color is ruby red with bluish reflections, clear, almost crystalline. Notable floral hints and fruit of blackberry, ripe fruit and jam. On the palate, the soft tannins envelop the palate, roundness manifests in the persuasive harmony and exceptional balance. It pairs with game preparations flavored with spices and aromatic herbs.
In conclusion, we can affirm that Antonio Bellicoso's wines are an example of how with patience and dedication it is possible to create products of excellent quality, with a sure future and an outstanding quality-to-price ratio. Even if we are talking about products that are difficult to find on the market.
Wines of great character, made with love. The wine tells you so.
