The result of careful and distinctive research into the potential and characteristics of mountain areas, the spumante dei Nebrodi is now a reality. In these mountainous areas of Sicily, vineyards, used primarily for personal consumption, were present in small plots even at significant elevations (800–1,000 meters above sea level).
It was not until 2010, however, at the estate of the Borrello brothers in Ucria (ME), that Irvo conceived an experimental vineyard at 1,200 meters above sea level. A number of white varieties were planted, predominantly native ones such as Catarratto.
A major opportunity for the Region to make use of mountain areas not suited to other agricultural activities, thus ensuring a degree of productivity while also – and above all – protecting the soil and the land.
Through the use of sustainable cultivation techniques, explains Antonio Sparacio of Irvo, an anti-erosion barrier is created and soil conservation efforts are supported.
The benefits do not end there: when positioned at the edge of a woodland, the vineyard acts as a barrier against the risk of fires and also allows, among other things, indirect and greater oversight of the territory, ensured by the greater workforce required for vine cultivation.
It is known as "Viticoltura Eroica" – Heroic Viticulture. Not by chance: cultivating vines in these environments, in addition to preserving local traditions and culture, allows for an improvement in the landscape and environmental conditions of the Region.
