The evening had the best of premises: three friends united by a passion for wine, a cozy spot with an inviting name (N'Ombra de vin) and some lovely charcuterie boards to pair with a good wine!
Everyone agreed on the food, but the wine? Well, on that front we just couldn't agree, and we ended up ordering three different glasses.
I don't like ordering by the glass, but desperate times…
My attention fell on "Rosso Melograno" – I adore this fruit with its extraordinary properties, I love its intense color, its flavor and above all its vibrant juice. But I don't know this wine.
It's made from Sangiovese e Montepulciano; in the glass it presents a ruby red that isn't very bright, with an orange rim. On the nose it's hard to pick up much – I let it breathe, I swirl the glass, but all I can detect are classic red fruits and a distant hint of plum.
The body is light and thin; the wine on the palate confirms the lack of perception and emotion found on the nose, and ultimately comes across as drinkable but anonymous.
The producing winery Roccafiore did not impress me at all this time, but as I always do, I will give a second chance to this Umbrian producer, which certainly has a beautiful terroir that often gives birth to great wines.
The charming name led me astray – I was certainly expecting better! My friends didn't fare any better either: as they say, "misery loves company"!
The overall balance of the evening is nonetheless positive: great friends, a lovely and lively venue filled with charming women, simple but good food – on the wine, just this once, we can let it slide!
