James Dean, Aston Martin DB5 and Coupè Monterossa

Monterossa is a historic winery in Franciacorta: headquartered in Bornato, 75 hectares of vineyards, 500,000 bottles per year, 4.5 million euros in revenue. James Dean, Aston Martin DB5 and Coupè Monterossa

Monterossa is a historic winery in Franciacorta: headquartered in Bornato, 75 hectares of vineyards, 500,000 bottles per year, 4.5 million euros in revenue.

Managed by Emanuele Rabotti, son of founder Paolo, it also "boasts" the presence, among its shareholders, of Oscar Farinetti who owns 33% of the company.

Engaging marketing campaigns in their slogans and packaging are at the heart of this company's modern look.

The wine we will taste today is the Coupè non dosato, and before drinking it we can't help but quote the winery's website, which presents it so evocatively:

"An evocative name that calls to mind an imaginary world of passion, style, and carefree spirit."

Moods associated with the end consumer of sparkling wines, who is probably looking for exactly these sensations.

"Its origins: The word Coupè actually derives from the French word Couper, meaning to cut – a concept that in winemaking is condensed into the term Cuvée."

If it were an actor, this wine would probably be James Dean: handsome, carefree, untameable; if it were a car, it would be an Aston Martin DB5 Coupè – the one from the old 007 films, adventurous, cheeky, elegant; we're sure the result is exactly what was hoped for!

Truly excellent work by the communications agency Ranieri Design and by Gigi Simeoni, the illustrator who brought his talent to the world of wine.

Today's wine is of course produced in the Franciacorta DOCG zone, among the municipalities of Bornato, Brescia, Cellatica, Erbusco, Monterotondo, Provaglio, Provezze, Cologne, Passirano and Adro. The soils here vary in composition, from glacial moraine to sandy/clay.

This wine is a cuvée of Chardonnay (and you can tell!) and Pinot Nero.

It is left to ferment 56% in steel tanks and the remaining 44% in oak barrels, which further enrich its aromatic profile; then 24 months in the bottle, on the lees, to complete the process.

On the eye it presents a very bright straw yellow colour with greenish reflections and a fine, elegant perlage; on the nose it is truly very complex and captivating: pineapple, citrus, pink grapefruit, elderflower, iodine, almond, butter. On the palate it is very acidic, sharp as Uma Thurman's sword in Kill Bill; ideal with food, elegant as an aperitif.

A big, strong company, well-executed marketing, the presence of Farinetti, a product as well-known as Franciacorta: so much material for criticism! A wine expert would have a field day!! But if all of this is in service of a good product, which doesn't even cost that much (around 20 euros at a wine shop), then "Che parlamm a fa' sempre stesse cose?" as Pino Daniele would say.
