Today we're in the mood for bubbles again!
Our choice fell on a Veneto winery: Col Vetoraz, located at the highest point of Cartizze, in S. Stefano di Valdobbiadene, at about 400 meters above sea level, in a corner of paradise from which you can admire this fantastic area packed with vineyards!
In this wonderful place, the Miotto family settled as far back as 1838, focusing from the very beginning on vine cultivation; in 1993, Francesco Miotto, together with Paolo De Bortoli and Loris Dall'Acqua, founded Col Vetoraz, one of the most interesting and renowned wineries in the area.
The product we will taste today is a true excellence within the vast selection of Prosecco we could choose to drink.
Cartizze Superiore: an excellence
Today we will be drinking a Cartizze Superiore, considered the pinnacle of the DOCG in the province of Treviso. We are talking about a wine with limited production, given the very restricted area of 106 hectares in which it can be produced.
The name Cartizze appears to have originated from "gardiz" or "gardizze," a local expression referring to the racks used to dry the grapes – and indeed here the grapes are harvested late, when they begin to wither, lending the wine more numerous, distinctive, and rounded aromas.
Another version, on the other hand, derives the name from the husk of a corncob, called "cartiza," and it seems that grape bunches were once wrapped in these "cartize" in order to increase their sugar content and make it – as was customary a few centuries ago – a dessert wine.
Today's wine, the Col Vetoraz Cartizze Superiore, was chosen by Michelle Obama for the gala dinner held on the occasion of the first inauguration of United States President Obama.
The tasting
Col Vetoraz puts in "heart and hands": the harvesting and picking of the glera grapes are both carried out manually.
The wine is of course sparkling, made using the metodo Charmat.
Poured into the glass, it presents a straw-yellow color, an elegant mousse, and a fine, elegant, and persistent perlage.
On the nose it is complex and captivating: citrus, acacia, wisteria, pink elderflower, and the classic aromas of pear, apple, and white peach.
It has a velvety taste, supported by good structure and excellent acidity. Persistent and easy to drink, it immediately tempts you to pour another glass.
An excellent wine, truly interesting. Perfect as an aperitivo, but also paired with lightly dressed fresh fish.
