Barbera

Barbera is the most widespread red grape of Piedmont: high acidity, fruity, versatile. The basis of Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera d'Alba and Nizza DOCG.

Characteristics and history

Barbera is the second most important Piedmontese red grape after Nebbiolo. It is the basis of numerous DOC/DOCG wines (Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG, Nizza DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC). It produces wines of intense colour, high acidity, moderate tannins and a profile of sour cherry, plum and spices. Versatile: from fresh young wines to ageworthy Riservas.
